Who is The Alchemist?
The Alchemist is Alan Daniel Maman, born in Beverly Hills in 1977. At 14 he started a rap duo, The Whooliganz, with his friend Scott Caan, who later became an actor. When the group stalled, he moved behind the boards, mentored by DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill, who taught him how to use a sampler and a mixing desk. His first credits came with West Coast crews like Dilated Peoples.
The turning point arrived in 1999, when Muggs introduced him to Mobb Deep and he produced two songs for Murda Muzik. From then on, his dusty, menacing sample loops became part of New York rap’s sound. In the mid-2000s he released his debut album, 1st Infantry (2004), and became Eminem’s official tour DJ. He even co-produced music for Grand Theft Auto V with Oh No.
The last decade is where he became a legend to a new generation: one full album with one rapper, again and again, through his own label ALC Records. Along the way he produced “FEAR.” on Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. (2017) and “Meet the Grahams” (2024).
Where to start: six essential albums
The catalog is huge, so here is a path. Start at the top, then follow your taste.
1. Alfredo (2020) · with Freddie Gibbs
The one to start with. Ten tracks, 35 minutes, lush soul loops and Freddie Gibbs at his sharpest, with Rick Ross, Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine and Tyler, the Creator. It debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200, scored 88 on Metacritic and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammys. Its sequel, Alfredo 2 (2025, Metacritic 82), is sunnier and just as good.

2. Covert Coup (2011) · with Curren$y
Released on April 20, 2011, this short project is where the modern Alchemist sound started to take shape: hazy, cinematic loops and Curren$y’s laid-back flow. Fans still rank it among his very best, and the duo returned to that chemistry many times.

3. The Great Escape (2023) · with Larry June
The most accessible entry point: warm, sunny Bay Area rap with guests like Big Sean, Action Bronson, Ty Dolla $ign, Slum Village, Wiz Khalifa and Joey Bada$$. It peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard 200. If you like it, continue with Life Is Beautiful (2025, with 2 Chainz) and Spiral Staircases (2026, with Curren$y). We reviewed Larry June’s solo work in our Who Coppin review.

4. VOIR DIRE (2023) · with Earl Sweatshirt
The abstract side. Released first on Gala Music in August 2023 and on streaming in October, VOIR DIRE is built on loops that often barely use drums, leaving all the space to Earl’s dense, quiet verses. It is a masterclass in how much you can leave out of a beat.

5. Haram (2021) · with Armand Hammer
Dark, strange and unforgettable: billy woods and ELUCID over some of The Alchemist’s most experimental beats. The trio returned in November 2025 with Mercy, which Pitchfork rated 8.0 and called some of his weirdest and most harrowing production. Fair warning: the Haram cover art is not for everyone.

6. Russian Roulette (2012) · solo
For the beatmakers. His third solo album is a concept record built from Soviet-era samples, full of short tracks, interludes and guest rappers. It shows how a single sample source can become a whole world.

The 2020s run: one producer, one rapper
Since 2020 The Alchemist has released at a pace almost no producer can match, usually as full albums with a single rapper: Freddie Gibbs, Boldy James, Armand Hammer, Roc Marciano, Larry June, Earl Sweatshirt, Hit-Boy and, in 2026, Erykah Badu on Before The World Blows. The formula works because he tailors each album to its partner: sunny for Larry June, cinematic for Gibbs, abstract for Earl, eerie for Armand Hammer.
Producer’s corner: how The Alchemist makes beats
His sound starts with records: soul, library music, film scores and obscure finds, chopped into long, hypnotic loops. Over the years he has worked with the Ensoniq ASR-10 and Akai MPCs, from the MPC3000 to the MPC2500 and MPC5000, recording into Pro Tools. In an interview with Akai he explained that he spends time on EQ and editing inside the MPC, so the beat already sounds finished before it reaches the engineer.
Three lessons worth stealing:
- Let the loop breathe. On albums like VOIR DIRE the drums are minimal or gone. If the sample is strong enough, it can carry the song.
- Finish the sound on the machine. EQ, filter and process on your sampler while you build the beat, not later.
- Make albums, not just beats. His best work is a full project with one artist, with a mood that runs from track one to the end.

Verdict
Few producers have stayed this relevant for this long. The Alchemist went from Mobb Deep’s gritty loops to a Grammy nomination, from Eminem’s DJ booth to Kendrick Lamar’s albums, and in the 2020s he turned the producer-plus-rapper album into his own genre. Start with Alfredo, follow your mood through the list above and pay attention to the samples: every album is a lesson in taste.
