Quavo “QRÖMELIFE” Review: Pharrell, Grief, Fatherhood and the Migos Reunion

Fully produced by Pharrell, made while grieving Takeoff and released weeks after he became a father, QRÖMELIFE is Quavo’s most personal album and his most divisive. Here is the story, the songs, the reviews and the sales.

Four years after losing his nephew and Migos partner Takeoff, Quavo has released the most personal project of his solo career, and also the most divisive. QRÖMELIFE (pronounced “chrome-life”) arrived on October 2, 2026 through Quality Control Music and Motown: 14 tracks, 37 minutes, every beat produced by Pharrell Williams, and a guest list with Future, Offset, Tyler, The Creator, A$AP Rocky, Lil Baby, T.I. and Justin Timberlake.

It is an album about grief, faith and becoming a father, wrapped in Pharrell’s brightest, most playful production in years. Some critics loved the bounce. Pitchfork gave it a 3.3. Early projections suggested a quiet first week, and Quavo answered his critics online. Here is the full story, track by track.

The story behind QRÖMELIFE

Quavo’s life changed on November 1, 2022, when Takeoff was shot and killed in Houston. His second solo album, Rocket Power (2023), was made in the shadow of that loss and debuted at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 with about 32,000 units, far from the No. 2 peak of his solo debut Quavo Huncho (2018).

On Instagram, Quavo explained that he and Pharrell made QRÖMELIFE together in 2025, while he was “still dealing with grief”. He described the record as a story about getting through hard times with faith, family and music, and thanked Pharrell for pushing him creatively when he needed it most. In an interview with Idea Generation, he said the title is about how you respond when life brings something unexpected, and how you make it your own.

The other big change is happier. In a short film released on September 28, Quavo revealed that he had become a father for the first time, to a daughter. The film closes with him holding her, and it also remembers Takeoff. Talking to Complex, he said fatherhood gave him a new hunger and a new fire.

Quavo and Pharrell: the partnership

Pharrell is not a new name in the Quavo story: he had already produced for Migos and for Quavo Huncho. This time, though, he did everything. He produced and mixed every track, sings on “Baby Breath” and adds vocals to “House Music”. According to Complex, Quavo said Pharrell pushed him to think bigger, to make stadium-sized music, and that he wanted to challenge himself with new sounds.

The link with Pharrell’s other job, creative director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, runs through the whole rollout. The lead single, “HAAVIN”, premiered at Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2027 men’s show in Paris in June, and the track “BA” is named after Bernard Arnault, the head of LVMH. Pitchfork was not a fan of that side of the album, criticizing its brand placement.

Behind the desk, the team is top level: Mike Larson and Benjamin Thomas engineered the sessions, Manny Marroquin mixed it and Colin Leonard mastered it.

Quavo and Offset: the Migos thread

For Migos fans, the most important song might be “Away”. It is the first collaboration between Quavo and Offset since “We Did It Kid” on Kanye West’s Donda 2 (2022), and their first song together in a Migos context since Culture III (2021). It is also a preview of what is next: in September, Quavo told DJ Greg Street that Migos will return with a tour and a final album with Offset, including posthumous vocals from Takeoff.

Takeoff is also present on the album itself: the extended edition closes with “Hotel Lobby (Unc & Phew)” with Takeoff, plus a version from A COLORS SHOW.

What the critics say

Sales, the backlash and Quavo’s answer

The first sales estimates were not kind. Projections circulating online put QRÖMELIFE at around 13,000 first-week units, which would leave it outside the Billboard 200 top 10 and below Rocket Power. The official number arrives when Billboard publishes the chart dated October 17. Treat the estimate as provisional until then.

Quavo did not stay quiet. On October 6 he answered critics on X, telling them they had him twisted, and replying to a fan who wanted a different album that QRÖMELIFE is only “1 chapter” of a bigger “Book of QRÖME”. In other words: more music is coming, including the Migos project.

A producer’s take

From the beatmaker’s side, QRÖMELIFE is interesting even when it does not fully land. Pharrell keeps the arrangements sparse and bouncy, with lots of space around the vocals, and reaches back to the 80s and P-Funk through interpolations like Shannon’s “Let the Music Play”. Most songs stay under three minutes, built for playlists and short clips. The lesson for producers: a clear sonic world across a whole album makes it feel like one project, but every beat still needs a hook strong enough to stand on its own.

Verdict

QRÖMELIFE is not the comeback some fans wanted, and it is not the disaster its harshest reviews suggest. It is a short, bright, Pharrell-shaped record from an artist working through loss and new fatherhood, with a few real highlights (“Backwards”, “Baby Breath”, “Trance” and the Offset reunion on “Away”) and too many songs that blend together.

Its most important role may be what it sets up: a final Migos album with Offset and Takeoff’s voice. Until then, start with “Backwards” and “Away”, and judge the chrome for yourself.
